ANCIENT ROME VOCABULARY PART ONE

 

UNDERLINED BOLD words will be on a vocabulary test sometime in the near future.  I will announce it at least one class period BEFORE the test.  There are 25 underlined bold words.

 

CONTENT SPECIFIC VOCABULARY

Republic- a form of government in which citizens elect their leaders

Legion- large groups of Roman soldiers

Patrician- a member or the ruling of class

Veto- to reject

Dictator- a person granted absolute control over a government

Plebeian- ordinary citizens

Praetor- government officials who interpret the law and serve as judges

Civic Duty- the idea that citizens have a responsibility to help their country

Consul- head of government, usually with a limited term in office

Tribune- elected officials who protect the rights of ordinary citizens

Latifundia- large farming estates

Triumvirate- three rulers who share equal political power

Pax Romana- Roman peace

Proconsul- governor of a Roman territory

 

ACADEMIC VOCABULARY

Found- to establish or create

Involve- to include

Occur- to happen

Eventual- final or ultimate

Devote- to give one’s time, effort, or attention earnestly

Benefit- to receive help

Acquire- to get as one’s own

Legislature- a group of people who make the laws

Reluctantly- hesitantly or unwillingly

Assume-to take for granted; to be true

Intensify- to become stronger

Innovation- the introduction of something new

Transform- to change the structure of

Professional- relating to a type of job that usually requires training and practice

Civil- of or relating to citizens

Enable- to make possible

Inspect- to look over carefully

Distribute- to Give or deliver to members of a group

Contrast- The act of comparing by looking at differences

Capable- Able, competent

Successor- One that comes after

Aqueduct- A human made channel that carries water long distances

Gladiator- In ancient Rome, a person who fought people or animals for public entertainment

Satire- verse or prose that pokes fun at human weaknesses

Anatomy- the study of the body’s structure

Ode- a lyric poem that expresses strong emotions about life

Vault- A curved ceiling made of arches

Reforms- changes to bring about improvement

Mosaics-   motifs or images created by an arrangement of colored glass or stone

Saints-  people considered Holy by followers of the Christian faith

Administer- To be lawfully in charge of

Protect- To defend from trouble or harm

Philosophy- Basic beliefs, concepts, and attitudes

Contact- to make Communication or connection with something or someone

Medical- Relating to the practice of Medicine

Arch- A curved part of a structure that serves as support

Reinforce- to strengthen

Expand- to spread out

Participate- to take part

Legal- Of or relating to the law

Restore-  to bring back to an original state
